If you look under the hood—and we have—of most of the supposed SRI offerings at many firms, you’ll discover their attempts are the embodiment of greenwashing.

Our investment portfolios will never contain companies in industries that are inherently harmful to our planet or its inhabitants. For example, many SRI investment firms utilize a best-in-class approach to selecting companies to include in a portfolio. This means they’re looking for companies that are leaders in their sector, no matter the industry or how low their best-in-class bar is. But if you use best-in-class data alone, you might still come up with ExxonMobil, McDonald’s, or Johnson & Johnson in your portfolio. Our investing approach demands that we never settle for the best of the worst and instead seek out companies that effectively raise the bar.
